We've seen this technology in action and it does an excellent job of maneuvering around toys abandoned on the floor, or furniture legs that stick out of the ground. It also has a camera sensor that snaps the Roomba back to reality when it starts drifting from its intended location.

iRobot has also added a new set of rollers under the bottom of the Roomba that do not have bristles, and thus tend to be more resistant to tangles than earlier models. The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on carpets and hard floors. Its score on low pile carpet was excellent and it got a very good score on mid pile too. It was successful in collecting pet hair, however it struggled with the thick and long pet hair that was stuck together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the most efficient robots on our list despite the minor drawbacks. It's also less expensive than other top-of the-line models. It has many of the features you'd expect from a top model but does not have all the fancy apps and smart home integration that you'll get from other top models.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and get working immediately. After removing the battery pull tab and yellow bin insert from its undercarriage, all you need to do is plug it into its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, press its big "Clean" button, and let it go to work. It will return to its dock when it is running out of battery or becomes full of sand. There are also indicator lights on top that show the bin is empty, when it requires recharging, or if it loses Wi-Fi.
